A Few More Kidisms

We've been very busy lately, so I've been a little slow posting. I promise to work on that. In the meantime, here is a short post to tide you over.

Cole was so excited when he brought home his February calendar from school and saw that his class was having a Valentine's Day Party. A few days later when he was still talking about, I had to burst his bubble and tell him that we were going to be on our trip during his party so he wouldn't be able to go. He looked up at me with the saddest eyes and wailed, "But Mom, I had to miss my Christmas Party too." (We were at the Las Vegas Bowl for that one.) After discussing his options, including possibly skipping our trip, he finally decided that he would make his Valentines beforehand and send them with his buddy and also have his buddy collect Cole's Valentines and bring them home. After he was satisfied with that solution, some what, he looked at me again and said, "Mom, will you make sure that I don't miss my Easter party." I didn't have the heart to tell him that they probably wouldn't have an Easter party!
As soon as we pulled in the garage after our trip, at about 7:30 on a Saturday night, he sprinted next door to get his Valentine's bag from his buddy. Then he ran inside and proceeded to analyze every Valentine that he had received! (The can of pop and straw was from his teacher.)

I think I mentioned that Emily loves to "help" me in various ways. She also loves to "help" Addy, even when Addy doesn't really want her to or I don't really want her to. Most of the time, she is very cute as she tries to take care of Addy. Emily is even starting to let Addy play things with her like babies, dolls, or cooking/making a huge mess in my kitchen.

However, sometimes her "help" is not the best idea for anyone involved. One morning after my kids had not slept well, I was laying in bed trying to get the energy to get up. Cole and Emily were watching TV in the other room and Addy was still in bed, or so I thought. All of a sudden, I hear Emily say, "Addy hold still so I can change your diaper." As you can imagine, I shot out of bed trying to figure out how Addy got out of bed and what kind of mess was going to great me from the diaper changing. Thankfully, Addy hadn't held still long enough for Emily to accomplish much. I'm still not sure how Addy made it out of bed that morning, and I'm not sure I want to know!

Whoever said that you always take pictures of your oldest children, but never the youngest child hasn't seen the cute smile of Addy. It seems like I have more pictures of her than anyone because as soon as I pull the camera out, she gets a goofy grin on her face and says, "cheese" (at least that's what I think she says!).
Stay tuned for 150 pictures or so of our trip to Missouri!

Outside

Whether it's 25 degrees and snowing,
or 45 degrees (and they think it is warm!)
my kids love to be outside!

Whether they play in several feet of snow
or the sandy beaches(?),
my kids love to be outside!

Whether it's on a sled,
(or used to be on a sled!)
or playing with a ball,
my kids LOVE to be outside!
Their Mom can't wait until spring when this can be an everyday occurence!

I Love My Children!

After a rough stretch lately, due to teething, tiredness, and well, just being 5, (Or so we hope. It's much better to have excuses for grouchy, misbehaving children!), I decided that maybe it was time for some more kidisms to remind myself that my children make me laugh more times then they frustrate me.

One day, Cole and Emily yelled that they needed my help with something. When I walked in to see what they are doing, they asked me to put Emily on top of them. As soon as I had, Cole looked up with a grin and said, "Look Mom, we made a kid sandwich. Addy and I are the bread and Emily is the ham." I didn't even know what to say to that bit of creativity!

I love my son, but he is way too inconsistent for his mom's liking. In some things, like his homework, he wants to do it all himself without advice. This is good on one hand, but takes us twice as long on the other hand. Then, when you want him to eat, get dressed, etc., he seems to need/want help with every silly step along the way. I'm hoping that when he turns 6 in a few more months he will grow right out of this stage. I'm pretty sure I'm dreaming on that one, but I can hope, right?
Cole has had some great comments lately, all having to do with sports of course. He didn't go to the BYU-Utah basketball game (which he was not happy about), but as I was leaving I told him what channel the game was going to be on if he wanted to watch it. He looked at me and said, "Mom, I know that. All of the Mountain West games are on that channel." So much for trying to be helpful!
One night when we were at the BYU gymnastics meet, the marketing guys came out and were throwing stuff out to the crowd. Cole was jumping up and down and waving his arms just like everyone else. After the marketing guys walked by him about 4 times and didn't give him anything, he asked Chad what else he had to do for them to throw him something. Chad told him that since those guys were his friends and worked with him, it probably wouldn't be fair for them to give stuff to Cole. The crushed look Cole gave him was priceless. Cole has finally found a downside to his Dad's job!! (On the positive side though, because Chad is the sports administrator for the gymnastics team, Cole gets to play on the mats after the meet.)
My Emily does not like to sleep in her own bed at night, no matter what rewards/punishments/alternatives we have tried. So between her being tired and me being tired, we are having frequent meltdowns. (Her, not me). But she has a sweet personality and good intentions and loves her brother and sister (sometimes more than they like). She loves to chase Cole around trying to give him a good night kiss, which he of course hates, which makes the game all that much better for Emily.
The other day, Emily leaned over to me and says, "Mom, I know what I want to be when I grow up. Mrs. Claus." At least she has a giving spirit?
Emily is also a constant source of head shaking incidents that hopefully I will find funny later on!
She is always trying to help me out. Even if her idea of helping and my idea of helping are different things! One day she came out and told me that she and her friend had cleaned the bathroom for me. Unfortunately I had left a sponge out and they had taken that as a cue that the bathroom needed to be cleaned and not that it had already been cleaned. When I went to admire their work, the bathroom was covered in water (thankfully I previously convinced Emily that she could only use water to clean things, not soap!) that they had used to "clean" the bathroom. As I looked further, they had also "cleaned" the closet, so it was also covered in water. What a helpful child she is!

My teething tormenting baby seems to be growing up way too fast! She has a quick smile, which usually saves her from getting in too much trouble. Maybe one day, she will learn that she is going to have babysitters and she'd better just learn to deal with it!
Addy wants to be big, just like Cole and Emily. She used to love them from a distance, but not so much up close. Now, much to their dismay, she wants to do exactly what they are doing. If Emily is coloring, Addy wants to color. I have had to start hiding coloring objects because she doesn't have good discretion as to what she's coloring on! If they are playing the computer, Addy wants to be right there next to them pushing buttons. If they are reading, she wants to also.
No my child is not a vagabond, she just likes to wear everyone else's clothes and shoes. Here she has on Emily's jacket and Emily's friend's boots.
And in Emily's dress up clothes which are too big for her to walk in.
One day, I was in the bedroom getting ready for the day when I realized Addy had been suspiciously quiet for far too long. I went to check on her and discovered that she must have decided she was hungry. She had taken Cole's bowl of cereal and his cup of milk and combined them into one giant mess! She was sitting their happily eating her milk and cereal.
And of course the biggest kid of all. He was so excited when he opened this Christmas present from Brian. It almost killed him when I didn't rush down right away to help him put it on the wall. But we did get it up, and he has proudly showed if off to everyone new who comes to our house! We love his dedication to his team.
So, I guess once again, after remembering their cuter moments, I can survive through the difficult ones!
I love you guys!

The Circus!

Cole and his buddy next door have very active imaginations, to say the least. About 3 weeks ago, they started building a "circus" in the basement. Now, neither one of them had ever been to the circus, so they really had no idea what a circus entails. (They have read books that talk about a circus and Cole has been to Circus, Circus in Las Vegas, but that is the extent of their experience.) Nevertheless, they developed games, booths, activities, and libraries (yeah, no idea where that came from). I didn't really mind because it kept them busy for several days and it was in the basement, so I could ignore the mess. Pretty soon they were telling others about their circus and telling them they would invite them to it when it was ready. I assumed that just like many of their other ideas, they would get bored with it and move on to something new. However, this never happened and last Saturday they started calling their friends to invite them to the circus that afternoon. At that point I panicked a little bit because I wasn't entirely sure what or who or any details that they had planned. Thankfully the first couple of people weren't able to come, so we were able to talk them into doing it on Monday, which was a holiday, so we could get a little better organized. I sat down with them and we made a list of who they wanted to invite and what food they wanted to have. (I figured I could do the food and they could do the games and we could all be happy! Plus I figured that if we provided good food, then everyone would love the circus, even if the games were interesting. And then, my little boy could be happy because everyone loved his and his buddy's idea!) So on Sunday, we delivered invitations,
and on Monday afternoon, we had the circus!
They even had a clown! (The clown did an excellent job being goofy, as usual. Everyone loved him and the lipstick came off...eventually!)
I apparently missed a lot of the games because I was socializing upstairs with the other adults who came to see what was going on! But they had a boy library and a girl library,
a hunting area where they shot bows and arrows,
a movie area,
and they tell me this one was a foot massage game.
They also had free time to play with toys.
Both boys did tell me the games did not go as they planned because they ended up having way more ball fights then they expected.
But they still enjoyed it and thought it was great!

Not to be outdone by the games, we had to come up with good circus food. Cole's buddy's grandma has a cotton candy machine that they borrowed. It was probably the hit food, as you can imagine.
Addy didn't really like the cotton candy. I'm pretty sure the fact that it made her hands sticky had something to do with that! Some circus guests enjoying the food.
We also had snowcones, even though it was like 30 degrees outside. (Thanks Aunt Katie!)
And, we had a decorate-your-own cupcake area.
All in all, I think the circus was a great success. Everyone seemed to have a good time and the boys were very proud of themselves. It wasn't even too much work for the moms, so they might get to do it again some day!
